Sleeping Issues

February 1, 2009 | By Tina F. | 8 comments

Another question about Riley and Darla. So does anyone elses Beagles have nightmares or breathing issues when they sleep? Riley for the past month has had nightmares. He will start breathing heavy, then whining, then sounds like a dino, then he'll wake up startled and lunge at whatever is next to him. Darla breaths heavy and snores, and I think sometimes that they stop breathing. But I was wondering if anyone else experiences this with their beagles? Thanks

my beagle has some breathing problems as well. every once in a while she will start gagging when she gets excited. i recently found out that she has an elongated soft palate, which is common. she could get surgery, but it doesn't affect her enough to put her through sx.

My beagles snore and twitch a lot too. We have to be careful with our boy - never put our face near him when sleeping. Sometimes he is startled on waking and if u try to touch him he will wrinkle his lips in a semi-snarl. Beagles also "reverse-sneeze" so it sounds like a grunty-cough but it is their palates getting flipped so-to-speak. Our 1st vet pumped our boy full of anit-biotics for kennel cough but it never went away and turns out, our friend told us her beagles do the weird breathing things all the time.
