The dip sticks are the easiest tests to use to test your aquarium (or home) water. I used to breed snails and constantly needed to test the ammonia in the water. I found this test to my the fastest, easiest method. There is no measuring or waiting, just dip the stick in some aquarium water and the results come out quickly!

I just realized that I clicked on the pH tester, not the ammonia. I've used both though! I've actually needed the pH tester more b/c I have hard city water and it's hard to keep my pH at a good level. When I bred snails, I especially tested the pH a lot b/c it's very important for the snails to have the right pH in order to grow and survive.
