Fish food - Freshwater/saltwater Nitrite Test Kit

By aquarium pharmaceuticals

Nitrite is a toxic waste material found in varying concentrations in most aquariums. It is produced by nitrifying bacteria nitrosomonas in the biological filter as it breaks down ammonia. read more...

Additional Description

As the biological filter develops and grows, the bacteria nitrobacter use nitrite as a food source, converting it to non-toxic nitrate, thus reducing the level of nitrite in the aquarium. This test kit reads total nitrite (NO2) levels in parts per million (ppm) from 0 ppm to 5 ppm. Regular testing for nitrite is an essential part of routine aquarium maintenance. Aquarium water should be tested for nitrite every other day when the aquarium is first set up. In established aquariums, test for nitrite weekly to make sure the nitrite level does not rise. Read directions thoroughly before testing. Fill a clean test tube with five ml of aquarium water (to the line on the test tube). Add five drops of nitrite test solution, holding dropper bottle upside down in a completely vertical position to assure uniformity of drops. Cap the test tube and shake well for five seconds. Do not hold finger over open end of the tube as this may affect the test results. Wait five minutes for full color to develop. Hold the test tube against the white area above the color chart, compare the sample with the printed colors. The closest match indicates the total ppm of nitrite (NO2) in the water sample. Do not put water from the test tube back into the aquarium. Rinse the test tube thoroughly after each use.
