The spray works with four of the dog's five senses - he hears it, sees it, feels it and smells it. Citronella is a unique scent that most dogs don't normally encounter. It's non-offensive to humans, yet "unusual" enough to distract your dog. We tried this collar on our barking dogs and it made an instant difference. Remember, the collar should be used as a training tool and not as a punishment. When your dog doesn't bark, reward your dog with a"good dog" and a treat. This is not the type of collar that you should put on your dog and forget. It holds 18-23 sprays before you'll need to use the refill bottle to refill the collar. Gentle Spray vs. Shock Collars or Ultrasonic Collars -- Shock collars attempt to reduce barking with pain. The pain caused by ultrasonic collars isn't as severe as a shock collar, behavior experts observe only one-fourth the success rate as with the Gentle Spray Citronella Anti-Bark Collar.
