Review Details

We own two classic Flexi leads for our small terriers. Because we do not have a fence, the leads allow our dogs some freedom when we go out in the yard so they can potty. I also like to use them when we go on walks, as long as our path is in an area where it is okay for my dog to explore. For these uses, the Flexi lead is an excellent piece of equipment.

However, one must be very careful in using this product. Always buy a Flexi lead that is rated for your size dog, or for a dog larger than your dog. If you own a particularly muscular breed, be careful in how you use this product. A very strong dog or larger dog can snap the nylon strap part of the lead out of its connector, leaving the owner with a part of the lead while the dog bounds away.

Another potentially dangerous factor is the construction and design of the lead itself. The leash is part nylon strap, which attaches to your dog's collar like a conventional dog leash. The nylon strap is then connected to a tough retractable line that can be reeled out or in depending on what the handler does. This gives the dog the possibility of ranging away from the handler up to several yards. It also give a rambunctious dog the ability to wrap the handler or itself up in the line! This sounds humorous, but both dog and handler can be injured in this situation.

The manufacturer warns users to be careful of their hands and fingers when using the Flexi lead. Because of the speed at which the line can leave the handle, and because of the amount of force a dog can exert when running on the line, fingers can be severed if they get caught in it. Never, ever, allow a child to use this lead with anything but a small dog, and never allow unsupervised use. This kind of accident can happen in a split second.

If this lead is used properly it can be another excellent dog care tool. But the handler must be aware of the potential for injury to both owner and dog.
