I prefer this type of clipper to the scissors type. I tried the other type, but it was too hard to control and I ended up cutting more off than I wanted too. My dog was not happy since it started to bleed pretty bad. With the guillotine style, you may have to make several cuts, but at least you can do a little at a time, which is helpful if your dog has dark nails like mine. With the dark nails, you can't always see the quick, so it helps to cut a little at a time.
I also use a dremel style grinder to smooth out the edges after trimming.
