Review Details

Our vet recommended my beagle take valium. He has anxiety to gun shots, thunderstorms, and fireworks. I was told to give him one 10mg tablet when there was anxiety, but the sedation was really bad. I cut it in half, and he relaxes and doesn't carry on. We wen't for years giving him benadryl to calm him, it didn't work too well after while. Try the lowest dose first, then increase if needed.

just wanted to say that valium and xanax are 2 different meds. sedation is what they do and they work on the brain to calm whoever takes it. they are both addictive but wouldn't worry too much because the dogs don't take them all the time.
Valium and Xanax are both benzodiazepines, a type of tranquilizer. They have very similar actions, except that Valium has a half life of 20-100 hours and Xanax has a half life of 6-12 hours (in people). This means that Valium stays in the system longer and has an effect that lasts much longer. In people, this longer half life can be dangerous, in that the drug depresses the respiratory system and cardiovascular system, especially in people with liver or kidney disease who can't "clear" the drug effectively. Valium is a more potent tranquilizer and is not only used to reduce anxiety, but is also used as an anit-convulsant (management of seizures) and muscle relaxant (for example, in people with back pain and spasms or people who need to have a dislocated shoulder reduced). One drug is not "better" than th other in people - they have different effects, depending on the dosage.
