PWP tests every dog that is adopted or goes to another shelter for heartworm disease because living so close to the Illinois River we know that we have a very high prevelance of this disease. One sad day I tested 4 dogs (out of the total of 9 that our shelter holds) and all 4 were positive!!!
At first we would send blood to a lab to confirm the results before we began the expensive treatment, but every time the results of the snap test were corroborated, so we no longer double check. We have absolute faith in the accuracy of this test.
Because we can get shelter pricing, this test costs us approximately $5 to administer.
