Bonnie Wilcox, D.V.M., and Chris Walkowicz, The Atlas of Dog Breeds of the World (Neptune City, N.J.: T. F. H. Publications, Inc.), 1989, Fifth Edition, 1995.
This is a completely indispensable reference book that covers more than 400 breeds. It's printed on glossy stock in an 8 1/2 x 11 format which allows for many hundreds of large and magnificent pictures. An opening section of 77 pages categorizes all of the breeds according to "stem group, original purpose, and geographical development"; the resulting classification does not correspond to the usual groupings, recognizing such groups as "Northern Breeds" and "Southern Dogs." "Flock Guards" and "Herding Dogs" are separate groups, which surprizes at first but is well founded.
The core of the book is an alphabetical listing of all of the breeds with a substantial article about each. The vital statistics are given at the head of each article in a very concise list including height, weight, color, etc., and, very usefully, the name of the registering organization(s) including AKC, UKC, and numerous others unfamiliar to most of us on this side of the Atlantic.
Each breed is represented by multiple excellent photographs, and each of the different colors (e.g. liver/white, black/white for the Springer Spaniel) will be pictured individually.
An expensive book at $89.95 some years ago, but well worth the price. It is built to last and will stand up to years of use.
