Pros: Easy to use, doesn't harm the dog, great for dogs who like to pull
Cons: Some dogs can "escape" the nose loop.
I own a Siberian Husky puppy. He's a breed bred to pull, and eventually when he's old enough, I DO want him to pull -- but in harness.
Huskies are a thinking breed, and very willful. That in mind, it's like going against his instinct trying to teach him to NOT pull while on a leash. He want to run and pull, not walk calmly at my side.
I opted to get the Gentle Leader to correct this problem. When my dog was on a buckle collar and leash, he had so much strength in his neck to be able to pull and keep pulling. It'd take me all the strength in both my arms to stop him if he got spooked by something or just plain wanted to pull me.
With the Gentle Leader, I have absolutely no problems keeping my dog at my side. He knows he can't pull with it on, because he no can no longer pull from his neck and shoulders with a regular collar. With the Gentle Leader, it's like how you would be able to walk a horse. Once you have control of his head, he can't really do anything.
Some minor cons to the Gentle Leader is that not all dogs enjoy the nose loop. When they first attempt to pull, and keep trying to pull, it puts slight pressure on their snout, and that makes them try to pull it off of them. I've had this on many occasions when first starting out using it on my Husky, and my parents border collie mix, and my dogs have been able to "escape" the nose loop, despite it looking to be properly fitted. Another minor con is even when it's fitted correctly, if the dog continues to try to pull, the neck and nose loop will somewhat shift to the side of the face, which could possibly have the nose loop shift over their eye if you don't pay attention.
To avoid these problems, you should try to use the Gentle Leader in conjunction with training your dog to loose leash walk. "Be a tree" when they pull, so that they won't keep trying to excessively pull and cause the head collar to shift, or the nose loop to be able to get pulled off.
