Pros: Solves the "choking problem" when training a dog on leash.
Cons: Takes some getting used to for both the human and canine.
Years ago my husband I took a dog obedience class with our dogs. The instuctor wanted all participants to use the prong collar. It worked well, especially for our husky-mix who liked to pull. It bothered me a bit that the collar actually had metal prongs and it was difficult for me to putthe collar on the dogs, but it worked! This time around with our 2 new puppies we took another obedience class and used just a regular collar and leash. By the end of the 6 week class our hands were raw from trying to correct each of our pups. After the class was over (and paritally due to instructor suggestion) I decided to give the Gentle Leader a try. It is amazing the different in each dog. They still want to pull but when they do the Gentle Leader makes it impossible for them to pull ahead without turning their heads. When they do, they end up looking at me and I issue the correction. No more yanking on the leash to get the dog to stop and listen. Each time we go for a walk all it takes is a few corrections and they remember not to pull. It really is gentle on BOTH you and the dog. I feel like I am in control and the dog respects my wishes. It's almost like the dogs say, oh that's right we are going on a walk together. My hands don't hurt and the dogs enjoy taking walks. The only downside is that part of the leash fits over the dogs nose. It would be an under statement to say the leash bothers them. However, it only bothers them because something is on their nose. The leash is not too tight because they can eat the treats I give them when teaching sit and stay etc as we walk along. This is really only an issue right at the beginning and at the end of the walk. When we are in the zone, so to speak, they don't even notice. If you've learned to walk dogs using different collars this will be a learning experience for you too but it is worth it. In a few months I am going to teach my 7 year old how to walk the dogs using the Gentle Leader. It is that good at fixing the pulling habit and making walks an enjoyable experience!
