My first Flex-2 retractable leash was one I purchased in The Netherlands in the late 1980s after I saw other dog owners using them and wanted one for me and my dog. We both experienced a short training period before either of us was comfortable and I trusted the retractable leash, but we soon loved it. (I still have the original Flex-2 leash though sadly I no longer have my little schnauzer since she passed away in 1993.)
