Pros: Well organized
Cons: Too much focus on metro areas
I like the preface, introduction and helpful hints. I also like the mini write-ups about hiking trails, etc. There really is a lot of very helpful information in this book.
I, however, found too much focus on areas near larger metro hubs. There are so many great trails away from cities.
The edition I use is from 1995 and I still do refer to it. Many things have changed, so always call ahead if planning lodging. Perhaps an update, even divided into northern & southern CA would preoduce a better result.
To be fair, California is a huge state, so trying to create one comprehensive book presents a problem in and of itself! I rated the book as a 3, useful for basics, but not totally helpful to reach remote areas.
