Supporting Shelter: Story County Humane Society

Pros: Only trainer in Ames

Cons: violent training methods, disrespectful and arrogant trainers

The first day I was in this class, my dog growled at the trainer. She told me I should yank her leash and shake her around to correct this. I told her I did not want to train my dog this way. She proceeded to yank my dog's leash and shake her around against my wishes. Then she told me to grab my dog's cheeks and shake her face if she growled. I told her I would not do this either. The trainer then told me that if I didn't follow her methods the dog would eventually have to be euthanized because she would end up biting somebody.

This was just one of a series of incidents in which the trainers purported their violent methods as the only way to get through to dogs, and then belittled or threatened us if we did not follow these methods. They did not respect any variation in training that we wanted to give our dog.

I have been through dog training classes before, and they were nothing like this. I have also trained dogs on my own, and I know that the Cyclone Country Kennel Club's methods are not the only ways to get through to dogs.

Inevitably, in any class someone will disagree with the teacher, and that is not a problem. The problem occurs when the teacher has no respect for this disagreement, and cannot even fathom the idea that there may be a variety of ways to solve one problem.

I urge anybody who wants to participate in this class to stop, and ask yourself, "Do I want to be treated with respect?" If the answer is yes, do not participate in any activities of the Cyclone Country Kennel Club.
