Review Details

From the UKC web site:
"Established in 1898, the United Kennel Club is the largest all-breed performance-dog registry in the world, registering dogs from all 50 states and 25 foreign countries. More than 60 percent of its 13,000 annually licensed events are tests of hunting ability, training and instinct. UKC prides itself on its family-oriented, friendly, educational events. The UKC has supported the "Total Dog" philosophy through its events and programs for over a century. As a departure from registries that place emphasis on a dog’s looks, UKC events are designed for dogs that look and perform equally well."

I used to show in AKC, but have switched to UKC because their events are simply more fun. They are all about the dogs and do not allow professional handlers, making their competitions much more accessible for owner-handlers and amateurs. Their Total Dog focus also fits with my priorities for my dogs. I want a dog who fits the standard and who has working ability as well. UKC also registers mixed-breed dogs through it's partnership with AMBOR (American Mixed Breed Obedience Registry), which gives these dogs access to a wide variety of performance events. UKC events are family-oriented, with drinking and swearing prohibited.

UKC's registration services are outstanding. They offer very complete pedigrees and were the first to utilize DNA. They also offer performance pedigrees, allowing breeders and buyers to see all the accomplishments of a dog's ancestors. Their customer service is unparalleled. If you call their office, you will talk to a knowledgeable person who will be polite and try to take care of all your questions and solve any problems you may have -- a radical experience these days.

Their obedience, agility, and weight pull programs are challenging, but still safety-oriented and designed to be accessible to all dogs and handlers. They have a comprehensive Juniors program, encouraging and rewarding youth accomplishments in both conformation and performance. They have more hunting programs than any other registry I know of, as well as dock jumping and protection titles.

An outstanding dog organization.
