Pros: Setting the Standard For Good Breeding and Good Bloodlines
Cons: You can't register a full blooded dog without papers on both parents, which isn't a con!
The AKC requires both parents of a dog to be registered through all of their parents, grandparents, etc, to the origination of the breed. They well NOT register any dog without these papers and pedigree. It would be impossible to get any dog registered without having AKC papers fraudulently obtained. They require DNA if they question the litter, the parents names are printed on the puppy registry papers, along with the Breed and date if birth. Due to these Strong Requirements, you can rest assured an AKC dog is what he claims to be. AKC will not endorse or allow puppy mill dogs to be registered. They do home inspections and will terminate a breeder's line if found to be deceitful or to be overbreeding. Puppy mills would be reported and dropped from AKC breeders in good standing. They are a great resource to use when determining if your dog should be bred. They are behind Westminster, Eukanuba, and all of the great Breed Shows. I believe the other reviewers are thinking of CKC, as CKC does allow anything to be registered with only a vet's note.
AKC Breeds all have a Standard, which includes height and color perimeters, as well as if markings are allowed, and where. The dog's body, head, legs, croup, muzzle and teeth are all important for registry with the AKC. The way of movement is crucial to each specific breed. AKC strives to Improve the Breeds, making them stronger, and spay or neuter dogs to be used as pets, or dogs of less than perfect appearance. The AKC Shows are used to find the best dogs of each Breed, Group, and Best of Show. They also have AKC agility, good companion programs, a pet Therapy program, etc. AKC is making strides in making owners accept responsiblity for their dog's entire life. They are available to Breeders and new puppy owners for advice. Their Website is wonderful. It even shows what dogs are available from your area for sale.

I have personally known breeders that would use the paper work of a dead dog to get AKC registration. I know breeders that pay for the paperwork from other breeders so they can register "the dog". See my review

AKC is not perfect, but the scenario you describe is the fault of sickos. How can the AKC know if you are using papers for a dead dog? However, they will and do, send out inspectors to check your home for things like that. They require DNA from people with dogs over 10 years, or with people that are being flagged as a questionable litter. What you are complaining about is the People who lie, cheat, and steal. It is not the AKC's fault, it is the bad People's fault. Re-read my review.
