Although my name points to the island of Malta, there's really no proof I started there. For sure I've been around the Mediterranean and Europe for centuries -- more or less in my present size (10 inches at the shoulder, 4-6 pounds) with my long, silky coat -- chasing rats from the wharves by the harbor or chasing chills from the laps of royalty. I was accepted to the AKC's Toy Group in 1888.

What to expect
I'm a perfect apartment dog, but I do expect daily exercise -- a stroll around the block, some socializing in the small-dogs section of the dog park, whatever you think is best. And when we get home, a nice brushing and de-matting will keep me looking spiffy. Frequent baths and grooming twice a year are also on my list of expectations.
Watch for
Possible eyelash disorders, patellar luxation, and hydrocephalus.
