Greater Swiss Mountain Dog

Tags: working, Large-sized, Kid-friendly, Protective guardian, Calm temperament

Imagine one dog that could accompany Swiss soldiers in battle during the Middle Ages, search for avalanche victims, drive livestock, guard the farms, haul heavy carts to market -- what could be greater than that? We're sort of the Swiss Army Knife of dogs -- only bigger (up to 28 inches at the shoulder and 80-110 lbs for female, 100-130 lbs for male) and no saw or corkscrew. Take me hiking, though, and I'll haul my own pack. The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog was recognized in 1995 by the AKC, as a cattle driver, and placed in the kennel club's Working Group.

What to expect

I want you to know one thing about my training. The obedience part will be a snap -- just start early. You be firm but gentle, and I'll be brilliant. However, the house-training part -- not so much. Just when you think I'm catching on, there will be a relapse. And again and again -- this could go on for months. Please don't be disappointed. Be patient, be persistent, and most of all be understanding.

Watch for

Possible hip and elbow dysplasia, epilepsy, bloat, and splenic torsion.
