Cage-free policy at Paws in Chelsea keeps pooches happy.

July 2, 2010 5:12 pm | By Zootoo Editor Flinn D.

When I walked my dog into Paws in Chelsea for the first time, I immediately felt relaxed about leaving him there for the rest of the morning. The website describes the facility as a “cage-less hotel and boarding club” which would seem to imply that it caters to the more discerning canine - or at least the more discerning canine owner. And from my experience, this is true.

The facility and staff are both top-rate. A mere two minutes after walking in the door, my pooch was already in a separate room being tended to by a courteous and experienced groomer, and I was on my way back to work.

An hour later when I returned to pick him up, not only was his coat shiny and new-looking, he was also cheerful and full of energy. Because of their “cage-free” policy, my dog had spent his time in a boarded-off area with an attentive human host and it showed in his chipper mood. Other times, when I’ve picked him up from other boarding places, he looks like he’s been through a war zone.

Besides boarding and grooming services, Paws in Chelsea offers day care with the choice of having your pet join other pets in a “romper” room area, or spend the day alone. I highly recommend the romper area, which offers full-time staff supervision. The dogs in the romper area seem to have a great time.

Paws in Chelsea’s standard grooming package costs $54 and consists of a haircut, nail clipping, ear cleaning and coat brushing. With shorter haired dogs (like mine) the groomer doesn’t actually cut the fur unless you make a specific request, but they use a fine brush to get out all the loose hairs that have collected. You have the choice of either of Paws’ convenient locations in Chelsea or Soho. Day care costs $18 and $30 for half and full days, respectively, while overnight boarding ranges from $47 per night for small dogs to $56 per night for large dogs. Cats are $30 regardless of size.

If your interested in boarding your dog or getting him groomed at Paws in Chelsea you should check out their “Dog Philosophy” page on their website. It gives you an idea what you can expect from the generous, experienced and accommodating staff.

Pros: Top-rate facility and staff. Dogs relish time in the day care's romper room.

Cons: None.

Paws in Chelsea rocks!

posted 7 years ago

My dog had been abused and abandoned, pardoned from death row just in the nick of time by a loving angel disguised as a rescuer, and then passed around from foster to foster before my husband and I were lucky enough to be adopted by this truly amazing pooch. I was so worried leaving him in strangers hands when we had to go out of town but P.I.C. came higly recommended from a friend. When I reluctantly first dropped Frankie off there, I could see he was anxious and probably thought he was just being passed off again by another person he trusted and this broke my heart. Tears welled up in my eyes as he stared at me, frightened, while he was lead away. When we picked him up a week later, he was in good shape, happy, and obviously well-cared for. So much so that the next time we boarded him at P.I.C. the following year, he was actually excited to be there and recognized one of the staff members right away, giving him the greeting that he reserves for "family." He couldn't wait to get inside with the other dogs and instead of giving me the saddest eyes in the world this time around, he looked at me as if to say "Are you still here, mom?" I can't tell you how good that made me feel. He had such a good experience there that he was actually happy to be boarded! And the fact that he recognized one of the staff as a friend from the previous year's visit told me that he was given attention and special care by this man. We have boarded him here many times after this and each time we were more than happy with the service and care provided. Can't recommend Paws in Chelsea enough. Your furry family members are in good hands here! They now have a 2nd location, too. Check them out:

Pros: Wonderful, loving, capable, trusted staff

Cons: Is being too wonderful be a con? :)
