The Paw Stop mixes top-notch day care with speedy, affordable grooming.

Offering all-day, supervised play, The Paw Stop is a tried-and-true dog day care facility located in Tribeca, steps from Manhattan's City Hall. In addition to play, the facility features training, obedience classes, and grooming.

I have been dropping my dog off at Paw Stop for two years now, usually from mid-morning to late afternoon, and I have never had a negative experience. The staff is friendly and experienced - and whenever I drop in, at least one trainer is present in the room with the dogs, just in case a scuffle breaks out. The facilities are clean and spacious, and from the moment you walk in the door, a staff member is ready and waiting to take your dog into the play area. As a special treat for the nervous owner, you are welcome to watch as his leash is removed and he is “acclimated” in a separate area where the other dogs can see him. But as a vital part of your pet's experience, he decides when and how he will join the group.

Dogs that board at Paw Stop are kept in spacious crates in a large room overnight and walked routinely by the staff. You can opt for your pet to participate in the daily play-a-thons or have some quiet time for reflection - or choose a combination of both. The grooming services are excellent, fast and well-priced. A full groom, bath and anal-gland expression takes about an hour and a half. The costs vary depending on the size of your pet, but are competitive with other grooming services offered in the area.

The Paw Stop also picks up and drops off your pet in their van for day care, grooming or overnight boarding. The costs of this service vary depending on location and it’s a good idea to call at least one day in advance to reserve.

Pros: Friendly staffers keep dogs engaged in daily play-a-thons. Facilities are clean and spacious, whether your dog is staying for an afternoon or overnight. Additional grooming options are reasonably priced and expertly done.

Cons: The popularity of this neighborhood favorite makes snagging appointments and reservations difficult.
