Freshpet Bark for the CURE
SECAUCUS, N.J., Aug. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Los Angeles area dogs and dog guardians are coming together for the first annual Freshpet(R) Bark for the Cure(TM), a five kilometer fun run and walk that will take place Saturday,
October 4th at 9 a.m. in Griffith Park - Park Center (adjacent to the Equestrian Trail). The event will raise money and awareness for canine cancer research. All proceeds will benefit the Freshpet(R) Foundation, a charity
whose mission is to improve the understanding of nutrition's role in the prevention and treatment of disease in dogs, including cancer. Freshpet(R) will also make a donation to the non-profit L.A. Parks Foundation supporting all the parks in the City of Los Angeles.
Dogs and dog lovers who would like to take part in Bark for the Cure(TM) can register at BarkfortheCure.com. To participate, registrants are asked to donate $15 per person (children under 10 are free) and $1 for dogs. Participants can raise additional funds through the website by sending
customized emails to their friends and family seeking donations.
The fun run will be followed by a FREE honorary celebration for dogs and their guardians. Post-event festivities will kick off with an awards ceremony for the top fundraisers and continue with Frisbee and agility course demonstrations, as well as exhibits including Freshpet(R) fresh dog food
sampling stations and local pet & human products and services.
Freshpet(R) will make a donation to the L.A. Parks Foundation for each person participating in the event. "We appreciate Freshpet's corporate model to support our new private/public fund-raising program for our parks," says Candy Spelling, a Commissioner of the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks. "We hope their example will encourage other companies and individuals
to help us by donating and showcasing our parks." Freshpet(R) is a proud supporter of the L.A. Parks Foundation, a recently-formed non-profit whose
mission is to enhance, expand, preserve and promote parks in the City of Los Angeles.
Spelling's dog, Madison, is the "honorary chairdog" for the event and will recruit other dogs to help her promote the event. "The more people who bring their dogs, the more funds our parks will receive," Spelling adds.
Bark for the Cure(TM) was created by Freshpet(R), the only U.S. manufacturer of fresh, refrigerated food for dogs. The all-natural food is made from human-grade meats and vegetables, and contains no by-products, fillers, wheat
gluten, corn, or preservatives. All of the major ingredients are locally-sourced near the company's plant in Quakertown, Pennsylvania.
"At Freshpet we believe that good nutrition leads to a healthier life for our companion animals," said Scott Morris, co-founder of Freshpet. "More research
is needed in the area of prevention and treatment of disease and the role nutrition plays. The purpose of Bark for the Cure is to truly make a difference and improve the knowledge around cancer and other diseases in dogs."
Bark for the Cure's(TM) main fundraising efforts are specifically targeted towards canine cancer research, which is the number one natural cause of death in older dogs according to the Veterinary Oncology & Hematology Center. The research being done into finding a cure for canine cancer may also help produce breakthroughs in the prevention, treatment and cures of human cancers
-- in particular childhood cancers.
