From personal experience these would last about one minute if the dog is around
Pros: Cats could swat the sponge balls around easily
Cons: They are history if the dog gets ahold of them

I was at our local animal shelter this morning and took a sponge ball among several cat and dog toys and learned first hand how quickly sponge balls are destroyed if there is a dog around. The shelter mascot (who is 16 years old) chewed the sponge ball completely up in one minute. Great for cats though.
