I have never, ever through 12 cats had a cat that damages anything in my home as long as I have a Felix Catnip Company Cat Scratching Tree (the company calls them trees cause you can get mega big ones too :)
The posts come in differing sizes and the base of these posts are wide and sturdy, so no tipping--which can be one of the reasons cats refuse to use regular posts and use your furniture instead. These posts are extremely well made and will not start to loosen and shake from the base, another issue with poor quality posts. Another feature is their height; medium to large sized cats need larger posts to completely streech (cant spell that) out their backs and conditioon their lovely nails. If the post is too small they wont use it. If the post has a material on it they dont like they wont use it. I have had a ton of positive cat scratching results on fabric type sisel. As opposed to the wrap around ropes types. Check out their website, you will not be disappointed.
