This stuff is AMAZING!

We have gone from a 2-cat (to a 1-cat) to a 5-cat household over the course of this past year. You can imagine the amount of output that four growing cats produce. I've tried EVERYTHING! With clay litters, especially the clumping ones, I couldn't stand the mess and trying to get the gooey residue off the litter pan bottoms every time I changed them. SO, I decided to TOILET TRAIN the cats (still in process, pray for me!). The clay and clumping litter were an absolute disaster. I headed to the pet store wanting to try crystal litter. Am I ever glad the closest pet store is a PETSMART! I chose the Exquisicat Pearl Fresh because it was cheaper than the other crystal (and because it was kind of pretty, being beads and all...). Once the cats got acclimated -- mix about 1/4 of your current litter in for one or two cycles -- it was wonderful.

The pearls absorb and trap moisture. Urine (and odor) are sucked into the beads and poop is 'dried' to hard, compact clumps to scoop. The only thing you need to remember is to stir the remaining pearls well when you scoop the clumps so that there are 'fresh' beads at the bottom to absorb more urine.

I wish I could tell you how long a jug might last under more normal conditions, because it is expensive, but given that the odors are trapped (they really are!) the life of a litter change depends completely on when there are no longer beads that can absorb more moisture and will depend upon individual pets' output.

I would highly recommend that you buy a jug, stir frequently, and assess the cost in your personal situation. For the lack of odor alone (and I have all 5 cats secured in a 4x6 powder room with about 2 inches of Pearl Fresh in the bottom of a stainless steel bowl suspended in the toilet as proof) it's worth it. Add to that no grimey, gooey mess... The one thing I would suggest is: use a high-sided litter box. The pearls are slippery and light and an enthusiastic digger will be able to fling them far and wide over a low one!

(As an aside, I did have to settle for Tidy Cat Crystals once. One use and I gave the rest of the jug to my starving-student daughter and went to a PetSmart across town to stock up on Pearl Fresh.)
