vegetarian products get a bad rep - but studies have shown that some of the healthiest and oldest cats and dogs around - are on vegetarian diets. Animals - in the wild are not herbivores - but thery have become domesticated and have since changed much in this regard.
Meat used in dog and cat food is very low grade - really the waste from processing meat for humans. It is also loaded with pesticides, antibiotics, and hormones. And you already know the issues with animals being fed their own kind with mad cow disease and the like. The animals are fed other sick and diseased animals that have died and were too sick to be slaughtered where their meat could not be used for food - yet they feed it to the animals that will be slaughtered and made into food. Makes no sense.
So house pets can be healthy vegetarians. Just make sure you get a good vegetarian food and make sure all of their dietary needs can be met with it. Mixing canned and dry is usually the best way to get the best of everything. The only problem may be with trying pets - who have already eaten other foods - to eat this. Some will not touch it. I have had some friends who said it wasn't a problem. But in my experience - sometimes it can not be done with animals who have already tasted flesh.....
