Review Details
Ever since reading this book, I have been re-inspired in my work as a veteran animal rescuer. I started volunteering at a local shelter and have worked very hard there to go from about 50-60% kill for rabbits to no kill using, if not the ideas loosely presented in this book, but the inspiration that it provides. Just the fact that somewhere in this nation, someone achieved 100% NO KILL for four years with no animal turned away, not even feral cats, is inspiration enough or should be for any one, employee or volunteer, in any shelter anywhere to at least try to make it work. It is very hard work and the onslaught never seems to slow and it can't be done alone, but apparently it can be done.
That it was first achieved in San Francisco has drawn criticism that this is the only city it could in fact be achieved in but then Winograd took the action plan to upstate New York and achieved the same there. From there he is slowly spreading the word across the country. I first thought, well sure, San Fran, no problem, then upstate NY, same thing, same footsteps as the hippie generation! But maybe there's a message in that. Let's listen. Read this and see if you can make it work in your community.
