This question sounds fairly simple, of course I would have freed Willy, but reading some of the the other answers, certainly makes you think. I wish he wouldn't have been captured in the first place and I think the ONLY time we should intefere with them, is when they are injured and they need us. The rest of the time, they should remain wild!

In the movie, yes, I would have freed him, but if the animal was bred in captivity it may not have the skills to survive in the wild. I don't like whales in captivity. Like elephants, they need room to roam and no tank however big, can replace an ocean.

Yes if I knew he had a good shot of living...

If I knew the animal could survive in the wild and be okay I would definitely free it.

I'm with Ben. Freedom is not always the best answer for all animals that have been in captivity.

In the instance of that particular whale in the conditions it was in, I think so yes. However, in the majority of cases of captive animals at zoos and aquariums, NO. The large majority of those animals don't know how to hunt and would die in the wild from not being afraid of humans or predators. Look at Keiko (the whale that played Willy) he only survived a very few years and that was with a lot of human interaction.

Great question. And my answer, of course, is MOST DEFINITELY. FREEDOM TO ALL WHALES. AND ANIMALS. AND PEOPLE!!
