People like to paint their dogs toe nails (mostly for females, however, okay for males, especially toy or miniature breeds) because they think it looks nice and it draws more attention to the dog.
The special pet polishes are safe.

They make a specifically dog-safe nail polish. OPI makes some in really awesome colors. It's safe if your dogs lick them (after they're dry) so you might try a sneak attack when they are napping in the sun. I don't typically get into that stuff, but once in a while I'll admit it's kind of fun.

Owners think it makes their dogs look pretty? Or if they're female, they can have matching nails. The possibilities are endless.

Your guess is as good as mine! My dogs nails are usually painted with a fine mixture of Missouri mud and a little detail of grass ;)

I don't think it hurts their nails. My concern would be them ingesting the polish, as it is generally composed of very harsh chemicals.

My doberman has nails that look like they're splitting a little sometimes. I've been really tempted to polish them to maybe seal them from splitting. His nails are black, and I'd just thought black polish would be good. But I've never tried it...probably never will.

I don't think it hurts their nails but it does look pretty silly.

It doesn't hurt their nails. There are doggie polishes that are safe to use in the event they lick them. Why people do it? I guess because they want their dogs to be as human as possible. Personally, I like dogs because they AREN'T human!
