Why does my cat not meow, she squeaks, is this normal?

Urgency:Need to know

Our new cat is a 1 1/2 year old female, she is spayed and has a clean bill of health, but her voice does not sound like a normal cat. She makes a very quiet chirping noise, almost like a squeak toy. I haven't heard this before. She is adjusting well, but her voice just sounds pathetic. Can you help?

One of my cats does a half meow, so it comes out "me." It's pretty cute, but alot of the time it comes out broken, like she has such a hard time trying! But she is perfectly fine, so I wouldn't worry too much about it. But if you feel like something is wrong, take her to the vet.

My Cosmo is the same way.If he isn't sitting there with an open mouth and a silent meow coming out,he does these little tiny sized pip squeak sounds. He's almost 4 and has been this way since he was born.I guess as with people, cats all have their unique little sounds,so I would consider your cat pretty normal.

I have one cat that has a very high pitched meow and my other smaller cat has a deeper meow. Also, one of my cat's actually grunts when he gets very excited and wants to get at a bug on the other side of the window. My grandmother had a cat that vocalized in a very similar manor to what you have described. I think they all just have their own individual voices.

My cat meows, he chirps, he "squeaks", he does the "silent meow", he coos, he makes a thousand and one different sounds. Cats are very vocal and every cat's meow is different, so I'm sure its normal.

HOWEVER, you know your pet the best; if you feel that something may be wrong, a trip to the vet is always the best solution, even if it is just for peace of mind.

That's just her meow. I have cats like that. One sounds like she smokes 3 packs a day.
