This is not meant to upset any cat lovers.

I'm by all means not an expert, this is just my opinion. I think dogs are more dependent on us, so they'll do whatever they have to to please us for our companionship. Therefore, you train them to do something for food (oo yummy!) they'll do it. Cats seem to be very independent. And by all means, I wouldn't consider they "stupid." Outside cats bring their prized catch to their owners to show what they did-so they have pride in themselves. And they know how to hunt in stelth mode-so I wouldn't say dogs are smarter than cats-we make dogs what we want to. If you don't work with dogs-they can be "stupid!"

I dont know if dogs are smarter than cats..but they are more willing to please people and are not as independent as cats are. This makes them willing to learn tricks and commands while cats are just happy to do their own thing.

I don't believe they are...each species has different kinds of smarts and it's nonproductive to argue the point.

They're not smarter. Just different. I have both dogs & cats. Some of my cats are smarter than the dogs. ;)

What I've read is that dogs innately want to be part of a pack and make their pack leader happy, so they will follow and obey humans. I think that is why we think dogs are smarter.
Cats, on the other hand, have been bred for looks, not personality. While they do form groups, they are not as "pack" oriented. Therefore, dog people see them as not a smart and cat people see them as smarter.
I have two dogs and a cat and I think they are all smart. I taught our late cat, Hobbes, to sit for treats. I was absolutely amazed that she could learn tricks, but then again, she was no dummy. We should just appreciate the differences between our "babies". Everyone has their place.

i don't think dogs are smarter than cats, i have both and my cats listen to some commands,i think because cats are so independent that they are harder to train but it can be done
