Question

When can you strt using a pinch collar on your puppy?

Details

I have a 4 month GSD who pulls a lot on her walks. I have tried redirection, but she is already very strong. We use one on our 1 yr old GSD, but I can't remember when we started to use it.

Use a gentle leader, head halter, or easy walker. This are so much nicer and easier on the dog than a pinch collar. The puppy is way too young for a pinch collar.

I totally agree with Marta. Every dog is different and for some a pinch collar works the best. However, it must be properly fitted and the handler should be trained on its use. A trainer can also answer your question about the appropriate age to start using one. Dog are genetically programmed to respond to the sensation given by a pinch collar. Marta is correct in saying that's how a mother dog corrects her pups bad behavior. It is also how the pack leader, (you), let your dog know you are making the decisions. Corrections with this type of collar should not be violent. In fact, it takes a very small correction to get the point across. My dogs don't seem to mind them at all.

I personally think you should find a different way, because the pinch collars aren't fun for the dog, i understand they need to know who's boss but maybe take them to a class for clicker training, or ask somone some other alternate ways!

I used to train with choke collars - very old school. You should get you puppy into puppy classes and then classes that are postively based (i.e. clicker training classes). As for the pulling, many people uses gentle leaders, a Halti, or an Easy walker - they must all be properly fit.

I think you will find that training your pupy using postive methods will reap larger rewards.

Regarding Cesar Millan's collar, I have used it on my lab/pit mix with good results, but I believe your pup's are too young for this collar. It depends on size and weight.
