What to do with stray dogs

i know what you mean. if you take it to a shelter, it depends on the dog if they will put it down or not. if it's very sick, and in some cases, to agressive, they might. if you are still worried, try finding a no-kill shelter tho i don't aprove of them myself.

First, you need to do a found report with the local animal shelters. I would also have the animals checked for microchips. Most animal shelters or vet offices can do this.

If no owner is found during the "stray hold time by law", then you can find them a home, contact a breed rescue, or you could ask the local shelter if you could foster the dogs if they will list them for adoption.

You can also list animals for free at www.petfinder.com under the classifieds.

I know our shelter will do courtsey postings for folks who don't want to bring their animal to the shelter, but need to find a new home for it.

Don't overlook breed rescues - if you find a dog that looks at all like a certain breed, or even a close mix, contact that breed rescue and see if they can take the dog.
Even though our rescue is full and we have no foster homes opn right now, I found another rescue who had room for 2 dachshunds that had to be placed this week or go to a kill shelter. Breed rescues usually cooperate with each other and try to find a place for dogs in need, even if they can't take it in directly. Doesn't hurt to contact one if you can identify the breed of dog you come across.

Check your area for a local no kill shelter. But be remember some of them have a waiting list. If you have the room keep them with you until they are at the top of the waiting list. But be warned if you choose to do so you may fall in love with them and decide to keep them.

I think that since you live on a farm and have the space, you could start your own rescue. Animals should not have limited time to be adopted, therefore I strongly suggest you do not take them to a kill-shelter
