What to do with stray dogs

I live on a horse farm and we get about 1-2 stray dogs a month. I hate to bring them to the local pound because the dogs are so sweet and I am scared they will be put down. Are there any other org. that will take strays?

If the dogs dont have tags so the animal control cant contact their owners the only thing I know to do is contact a No Kill Shelter. I have taken several that have appeared on my doorstep to them. I have 2 cats and 1 dog. All rescues. I just cant take anymore. We have leash laws for both feline and canine. So many rescues are full due to the economy but at least you know they will not be put down. May take alot of work on your part but would be well worth it. I wish you luck and thank you for caring about these dogs.

You should check with your local police to find out what you local laws are. Some areas require dogs be turned over to the local Animal Control Officer. If someone is looking for their dog they will contact the ACO but not know to contact you. Each ACO works differently they may take the dog or let you keep it. If they do pick them up you could always ask to adopt them if no one claims them and then find a rescue/shelter to help.

Andrea,
I have horses too and know how often animals get dumped, but you never know for sure if they were dumped or if someone is looking for them. Please call your local dog warden and local chapter of the Humane Society to list the dogs. Many newspapers will let you put a "found" ad in the classifieds for free. Vers and your dog warden should be able to check the animals for microchips too.

You can go to petfinder.com and put in your zip code to find rescue groups that are in your area too. Many rescue groups have sources for missing dogs. There are also several yahoogroups for missing dogs.

I know it sounds like a lot of work(it is!) and most rescue groups and shelters are happy to help when someone finds a dog. If you cannot find the owners, many rescues can either take the dog in, or help you re-home the animal.
