He is of advanced age, no doubt well cared for, I imagine he is wanting more interaction. He may need more toys, his cage changed from place to place, or more personal attention. I have open cages. My birds stay in one area most of the time but also visit me when they get the notion. This would seem to be a messy issue - but rarely do they venture from their area often. Does your bird have a companion? Even a stuffed animal that is very small like they are can be a nice addition to their lives. I have a lovebird that was never abused, yet is excessively abusive and I am retraining him. He has to stay in a cage, even though all the other birds are free. I placed a beanie baby bear in with him to keep him company, as he was really having issues. It helped very much. I have also found that keeping soft music on all the time around their area is very soothing for them. Lovebirds are very social and busy creatures. I keep endless supplies of newspaper for them to shred and change their area often so they have a change of scenery. I am trying to begin a natural area habitat that is mobile and doesn't take very much space. I will take some pictures and post them soon. Good luck -Magi

It sounds like it gives him something to do, he may be bored. He also knows that it will get your attention, even if it is neg. attention. He may also want out. Give him more of your attention and freedom outside of the cage.

My lovebird did the same because he wanted out, to be with me. Have you changed the amount of time your is normally out ofthe cage? If not, then do try to provide different toys and rotate them so he doesn't get bored. Take it as a compliment that he loves you. Don't use twistie ties, the metal could be zinc or lead based. Use one of the toy clips and lock it.

Hi,

I have a bird that knows all the tricks too! I would get tiny pad locks for the cage doors and use them all the time. The type that you put on a diary to keep out prying eyes.

Or you can get steel or some sort of metal, I am not exactly sure of the material used, at Home Depot or Lowes or probably any hardware store should have them they are called something like snap clips, I can take a picture tomorrow and post it here.

I use them to hang up the buckets in the barn, they just snap on and off...

The type of behavior would generally indicate boredom. Does he have a friend, lovebirds are social, and like company. Are there toys? Do you alternate toys in the cage every few days to keep things interesting? How often do you interact with your bird? He may be crazing more one on one active time with you. Don't buy a new cage, he will just find something else silly to do when he's bored. Fix the underlying problem and you will save money and have a happier bird!
