What's the best *non shedding* dog breed?

I had a pit bull and was amazed by how little she shed in comparison to my other dogs. My corgi sheds a lot and so do my labs and definitely my shepherd mix, so I would definitely go with a pit bull if I wanted a dog that doesn't shed much and they are really sweet dogs if you raise them from puppies.

I think if you visit specific breed rescues they can speak to the hypo-allergenic nature of their dogs. I would say Bichons, Poodles, and labradoodles. The only issue is that going to a shelter (or a rescue) there is no way for them to promise you 100% that the dog will not cause allergies to act up b/c the dog may not be pure bred and you still may be allergic to it even if it is.

I suggest a poodle for non-shedding; however, they can be difficult to find at a shelter.

You've been given some good answers on non-shedders. Can you find one at your local shelter? Possibly, many "city" shelters do end up with small purebreds on a regular basis - but out in the rural area we live in, our shelter doesn't end up with a lot of them. Do a search for the breeds you want on www.petfinder.com, I bet you'll find the perfect little candidate!

I personally have 3 maltese mixed dogs, 2 are maltese / poodle mix and one is maltese/chi mix all three do not shed. I understand that the reason maltese and poodles do not shed is that they have "hair" and not fur. I am not sure if that is the only reason but mine do not shed at all.

Although I can't answer from experience with the breed, many poodle owners have told me about their nonshedding trait. Apparently the Labradoodle mix retains this nearly hypoallergenic quality. Thanks to the internet, you can learn about a lot of rescue organizations for breeds, and poodles come in many sizes. Other breeds that I've heard about include schnauzers, and there's a Fanwood Schnauzer Rescue that is serious about their dogs...just read the two Web pages about a recent rescue in the Harleysville, Pennsylvania, area. We have a yorkie and she doesn't shed. She also learns very quickly and is very loving. My granddaughter likes to dress her and put her in a baby carriage and she loves it.

My L'hasa Apso has so many food and environmental allergies. You will find that the dog is itching and scratching all the time...this is an indication. I had food and environmental tests done which gave me a complete list of what he is allergic to ... very helpful. Ask your vet about them. Last thing you ever want to do is start shots. My doggie is on Prednisone but I have blood work done to check out effects on liver and kidneys.

It all depends on your preference in terms of size, personality, and activity level. There are several different types of hypo-allergenic breeds who shed very little.
