My little girl is over 5 months old but she is so teeny that I worry about putting her through surgery til she grows more. Any thoughts on when is the right time to spay? (she's indoor-only and our boys are fixed.)

fix her aspa. you want it done before her first heat to reduce chances of cancer and her howling all night long. shell recover faster when done before her first heat too. when they come into heat, they swell up and its more painful than if she werent in heat. most vets will spay kittens as long as they are 8 wks and at least 2#. they always give low doses of the sedation and anesthesia.

This sounds like the same problem that I am having with my toy poodle puppy.. I went to take him to be fixed and everything but they called me and told me that he was too small in that area to be fixed, he was 5 months old at the time. But, as time goes by, I have decided not to have him fixed unless he starts marking his territory or has problems or something..

we recommend 6 months of age that is goods timing before she goes into her first heat cycle. It is important to do before her first heat cycle so it doesnt cause behavioral problems such as marking/spraying in the house, trying to get outside to find a mate or attracting them to your yard. Also getting her spayed before her first heat cycle with cut back the risk of having reproductive cancers by 90%. I know that you are concerned because she is a little girl still but if you trust your vet she will be in good hands. You have to think too some humane societies do spaying as young as 8weeks old!

I think you should get her fixed as soon as it is okay as per doctor's advice.

I say any time after 3 months, 12 weeks.... It is scary when they are that tiny, but be assured no professional would do the surgery if it wasn't safe.

i think you should just get her spayed, no matter her size once she is over 8 weeks old. my friend's cat is kitten size, but she was spayed after she had already had her first litter. as long as your vet says it is okay, you should get her spayed.

The risks (and heart break) of a cat developing breast cancer are dramatically reduced if you get her fixed before her first heat. I had the same concerns about my Princess Fluzzy. She was too small for surgery when I adopted her from the Erie County SPCA so they let me take her as a foster. I gave them a hard time about taking her back for her surgery for almost a month because I was worried about her small size. She didn't have any problems and came out of surgery insulted but fine. That was 7 years ago. Veterinary Science has improved over the years so now it would have just seemed to be routine. (These days the size issues is more about your wallet) I would do the surgery in the next few weeks before she goes into her first heat

As long as she's over 2 pounds she weighs enough for anesthesia. If you're concerned take her into your vet for a good pre-surgical exam, get a pre-anesthetic blood work done. If she's healthy and just small it's ok to spay her. Some cats are just little as adults. I have one that barely 6 pounds at 3 years, She's a healthy normal cat. Females are going into heat right now that the days are getting longer. You should get this done soon.
