I would definitely not get a puppy. The playful teething and jumping could scare your daughter more. At our humane society, if someone comes in with a child who's afraid of dogs, we let them look at the dogs in the pens and choose form there. Letting them choose sometimes helps. We had a child come in who was afraid of dogs but ended up loving a bassett hound we had. You'll definitely want to get your daughter at least somewhat used to a dog before adopting.

I know some people would suggest big dogs and although I love all types of dogs. A big dog may knock a child over without even meaning too as I have had a big dog hurt my bad back without meaning to. A very good breed of small dog is a Boston Terrier as they are very gentle. They love children, other animals and people in general. That is why they are called the Boston gentleman. Please read up on them.

I would suggest a small dog such as maltese or a yorkie. I would not recommend a chihuahua though. They tend to have a snap back if picked on by small children.

please don't buy a pet - rescue one from a shelter..It's really about individual dog temperment than a specific breed
