We have an australian shepherd and we're always looking for new ways to get her to show her major smarts - what is the best way you have found to engage smart dogs during "structured play" - I'm looking for something more challenging than just 'Fetch' :)

Check Amazon.com or ebay. Do a search for dog trick books. These are usually full of different games and tricks to teach your pet. You are looking for ways to play. You can incorporate play and training at the same time. This dog sounds like it loves to learn. Then there is teaching and dancing with your dog, agility courses, hide and seek, as well as many other games you can play. Look into interactive toys the dog can play with by itself. Have fun!!

we play hide and seek.start easy places like just in another room and shake a cup of treats and call the dog so the dog comes running.when she finds u give her a treat, eventually move to harder hiding places and stop calling the dog just shake the treats.this helps work on coming to u when u call the dogs name also when u leave the room tell the dog to stay this helps with learning that too if they dont know it already.

You can always create an obstacle course like you would train for events. You don't have to spend a lot, you can make your own weave poles, jump bars, tunnels, walkways, it takes some thinking to find materials that work well or you can just spend the money and purchase them, either way this is a great way to keep a smart dog entertained and exercised.

You can play tug. You can have your dog lay down and tell them to stay and walk out of the room. See if they stay. Good luck.
