I would recommend buying one of those cardboard scratching boxes they sell at walmart and placing it over that spot on the rug. If that fails you could always try the nail tip covers.

My advice would be try the different methods to stop it but bottom line, I care more about my pets than my furniture and rugs.
Good luck

I would suggest getting a cat post thats made with carpet and sprinkling some cat nip on it. spray her with water everytime she tries to scratch your floor. good luck!

trim the nails, and offer a card board scrating post that has cat nip sprinkled on it.

Spray her/him with water every time s/he goes near that spot.
When cats pull and scratch they are actually using what they are up against to stretch their legs and back. Cats also have to stretch the tendons in their feet so they scratch.
Have you considered a scratching post.
Whatever you do DO NOT DECLAW your cat.

This is any easy question for me...
1. Do you have more than one scratching post for your cat? If so, are they different textures? Ex. One carpeted and one corrugated cardboard.
If not, that is your first problem.
2. How do you reprimand your cat when scratching the rug? If you yell at it or squirt it with a bottle, that won't work. Most cats don't mind water & in addition you have to have good aim.
If you are yelling when it happens, then you are giving your cat attention. Some cats will scratch where they aren't supposed to just because they are bored and they know that it will get your attention.
You should keep several soda cans with pennies around. When your cat scratches where you don't want it to, shake the can or throw the can of pennies in the direction of the cat. They hate the noise and will eventually learn that every time they sratch there, that the noise happens.
3. Are you rewarding your cat when it scratches on the scratching post? Most people don't realize how important this is. When I see my kitties scratching on the post, I always try to give them a good rub down and tell them what a good kitty they are. Now when they see me near a scratching post they will run over and scratch on it.
4. Is your kitty bored? A laser light can help with that! Kitties love to chase laser lights and it can help to get in some good exercise and stimulation.
I hope this helps. I have 6 kitties and don't have any problems with them scratching the carpet/rug.
