What does this say about his probable beed mix?

My dog is obviously part Labrador. His front parts, shoulders and head are black and shiny with typical length hair. But towards his hips and backend he becomes more brown and the hair is very short and somewhat stiff. He sheds little or not at all. I wonder if this is a clue as to what he is besides lab?

Have you asked your vet about this? It is possible he has some sort of skin condition causing that. I agree with the comment about posting a pic. Would be interesting to see exactly what you are describing. I guess if Chinese cresteds can be basically naked with a few tufts of hair, there could be dogs with short and long hair like yours, too. Or maybe the aliens have been tampering with him...oooeeeeeoooo. LOL! (Just kidding!)

I agree, sounds like Lab of some variety. Enjoy him for what he is.

My daughter has 2 chocolate labs, litter mates. One has what you called "typical" fur length and texture, the other's fur is shorter and somewhat stiffer. Is it possible your lab came from a mixed lab couple, one being chocolate? I've never heard of the black front and brown hind before, but your description of the differences in fur length and texture are consistent with what I've seen in these two labs.

Do you have a picture? Could be he's part Chesapeake Bay, they can have shorter wavy hair. You have a grab bag, congrats!
