What dental products are best?

My beagles are ok (not great) with getting their teeth brushed. It took 3 different types of toothpaste to find one they tolerated. BUT even after 2 months of regular(3 days/wk)brushing, the vet says their teeth and gums do not look good and they need a professional cleaning (requires them to be put under). Last time my oldest beagle was put under we had a scary episode, so I really want to avoid doing it again. I have seen ads in magazines for wipes, sprays, etc... Anyone have success with dental product?

make sure s/he as a dental chew toy. also some places have the option of putting your dog to sleep for brushing teeth.

Veterinary dentists say that the best way to keep your pet's teeth and gums healthy is daily brushing with a pet toothpaste. Your vet may have some toothpaste that also contains enzymes or plaque blockers that may be more helpful than just regular pet toothpaste.
There are also some dental spray products (again, sold at vets only) - this is often used for pets that won't allow their teeth to be brushed. The spray is applied to a piece of cloth or a gauze pad and then rubbed on the teeth.
There are several treats out there that have dental benefit. Make sure to read each package for more details. Most will note how effective the product is, you can go by that. There is also a Veterinary Seal of Approval for pet dental products (VOHC- seal) so you can also look for that on the packages.
