As odd as it sounds, I use just plain old soap and water to wash the area. My cat has been known to do this when he is unhappy. He uses the carpet area at the front door. What has worked the best for me is to use plain water to first wet down the carpeting that has been soiled. After that I spray on a little carpet cleaning shampoo - or will grab a sponge with a little Dawn detergent on it, and rub out the area well. Then it is back to rinsing with plain water to make sure the soap is out. If soap is left in - it will attract the dirt and becomes really dark. My situation is a little different than yours - so just take this for what it's worth - my solution. I have tried the sprays that are supposed to repel from areas, and have tried the different products on the market. This is the most affordable and seems to do the trick - until he decides to leave another sign of his displeasure. After clean up - I usually purposefully spend some quality time with him each day until the 'cranky kitty' syndrome is over. My cat is 10 years old this year.

There was a great article in CatNip on this same subject last issue. The writer, Dusty Rainbolt, compared several products and noted how well they appeared to work.
I use Arm & Hammer Carpet & Odor Eliminator Power Mist for accidents, myself.
