This past Sun, my dog broke out with these red spots. We went to the ER and they said it was hives. He has been on prednisone and benadryl since and they are worse now!!! I don't know what to do! They think it could be a reaction from the penicillin he took, but he took them for 2 weeks before this rash. May be he got into something, but what? Why are they not getting any better? I tried giving him a bath in oatmeal. How can I begin to find the culprit?

Poor Pooch! I had a similar problem with myBoston when he got stung by a bee. I made several trips to the vets which is about 15 miles from my house. A suggestion--call the vet again and tell them that something HAS to be done to help your dog. Also, ask if they have anything that they could give you to try to help the irritation of the hives. Be very persistant. Good Luck.

My sister's dog just brokeout like your dog too. The dog was scratching forever thought maybe it had soap left on its skin from a recent bath. But then realized the dog had shots given at the vet. Had an allergic reaction. Immediately gave some benadryal then took the dog to the E.R. The E.R. doctor gave the dog more benadryal and steroid shots and said to give more benadryal later that day. Finally the rash went away! I hope your dog gets healed very soon poor dog!

I agree. Sounds like a allergic reaction to me too. Did you feed him anything different than normal bfore the medicine? Also did you use any new kind of shampoo or anything on his coat? Try to see if you used anything that you don't normally use and that could be a culpit. Otherwise, it cpould be a skin condition. How old is he?

What have you been feeding him before and since this happened?
Have you tried cleaning with apple cider vinegar?
Sometimes for diarrhea, a bland diet is recommended to settle down the system. Maybe you could try feeding him boiled chicken and rice for a couple days. If that works, it could have been a food reaction. From there you would want to try home cooked food, grain free dog food, or raw dog food.
