Russ doesnt seem to mind riding in our truck but he always ends up getting sick once or twice during the trip. The longest trip being two hours. We've used meds from the vet that made him very tired but kept him from being sick, however the vet feels that the medication is not good to keep using. We were prescribed another medicine but it just seems to make him hyper and he still gets sick.

having them on the floor sometimes helps, but the only problem with that is they can't look out the windows, but the windows and the passing scenery is probably the thing that makes them car sick. i would say having them ride on the floor of the car.

I suggest avoiding giving any food to your dog four hours before the car ride. My dog gets carsick at times, so I avoid feeding him when I know we are going to take a trip. This of course doesn't work if your car trip isn't planned in advance, but hey, it's an option.

Dramamine works well and is my preference, Cerenia is also an effective anti-emetic (anti-vomiting drug), but many vets will not script it out for car sickness. Why? For example, your doggy takes a Cerenia, then eats some sort of poisonous item. Cerenia is so effective that your dog can no longer vomit (even the drugs vets use to induce vomiting do not work against Cerenia), and will then likely need its stomach pumped. I agree with the suggestions of crating/seat belt restraint. It's a good idea anyways as a loose pet in a car quickly turns into a projectile in the event of an accident.

Don't give you dog drugs. My dogs get sick more from anxiety than anything else. They start to pant and drool excessively after 5 minutes. They are usually ok on short rides but always throw up if they are in the car longer than an hour. There are many organic products that will calm them down. I haven't used this particular product yet, but the reviews are very good. It is called Richard's organic pet calm and you get get it at Petco. http://www.petco.com

Good Question. I am glad to see some of these answers myself. One of our dogs gets car sick so she usually does not go anywhere except to the vet about 1 min. from my house. Never knew about the dramamin. I guess if you go short distances and gradually increase the ride that might help.
