While this is not a pet, they live in our houses in N.J. and have taken over. Does anyone know the background of these disgusting, smelly bugs, where they nest and how to get rid of them?

Ugh! I know they are horrible. We are inundated with them. There was an article on them in the Star Ledger last week. I read it but I got the impression that nothing much works except sealing around windows and doors.

I have same problem in NJ. One turned up in my shower the other day!! I kept him in there and took it outside when I was finished. I hate to see them walking around in my house, but I feel so guilty killing them that I bring them outside. ---- Probably why they KEEP coming in!

They like to nest naturally between bark and under rocks near pine forests, so if you are close to evergreens that could explain their presence in your home.

I have read that they are fairly new to the area in the past few years.I don't know where they come from. They emit a smell when squashed. They enter indoors seeking warmth and are harmless, not nesting, feeding or biting on anything. They seem to appear out of nowhere though.I'm not so sure about the warmth part because Steve and I have seen them and been dealing with them ever since the siding roof and windows were done at the end of the summer in 08'. They do tell you to make sure windows and doors are sealed properly but all of ours are new so we are not sure what to make of these pesky critters or where they are coming from..Pai is taken by them, nudging them with his nose and jumps a mile when they move.Never have the camera in my hand for that though...go figure. The daily record did a peice on them not to long ago.

I'm not entirely sure where they come from. However, they do nest in any cracks in your home. The best way to prevent them entering your home is to go over all siding and windows and doors to make sure everything is properly sealed - this will keep them from nesting. The next step you need to take is to thoroughly clean your home and make sure you are rid of them. Also, keep them away from your home by putting bug-catching bags on the very perimeter of your property, you can find them at your local home and garden shop. The bags are filled with a sweet liquid that attracts the bugs. Good luck!!
