What are good fish to accompany black banded leporinus?

I have two black banded leporinus....When I first adopted them, I was told they would get no more than 6 inches long and would be just fine with fish such as neons, gouramis and danios. After a year, they were already 8 inches long and began eating the other fish.... I quickly made a new home for the other fish....and now have a large tank with just these two leporinus, who tend to hang out in the background most of the time.... I would love to put other fish with them, but don't want to get the wrong thing. Any thoughts....

Black Banded Leporinus are a peaceful fish, when kept with fish of similar size. They have been known to eat smaller fish that share its tank and to nip at the fins of other small fish. They should be kept in large schools. They will sometimes quarrel with each other, but less so if the school is larger. Overall, they fit well into community aquariums with larger fish. Black Banded Leporinus should be kept in large tanks, with plenty of rocks and plants to play in. Live plants are acceptable. Beware, however, as the Black Banded Leporinus enjoys eating live plants. The Java Fern is a good choice to keep with the Black Banded Leporinus.
P.S. Adult Leporinus are about 12 inches long.
