What methods do you use to keep your doggies cool outside in the summer?
I live in L.A. and it gets very hot here in the summer! I've had Bridget for only 3 months, and I know that she has very thick fur and overheats easily.
Currently we have a covered patio so there is plenty of shade and an insulated dog house. I also plan to buy a plastic kid pool so she can get wet to cool off.
(Spare your comments about how it is inhumane to put my dog outside. I can't be home 24/7, and I certainly can't be blasting the A/C constantly.)

Hi we also live in a place that get's in the hundreds in the summer. My dog's sleep in my laundry room I try to keep it dark and they have a fan going at all time. They have a doggie door to go in and out. I freeze 2 litter bottles so they have something cool to lay against. A kiddie pool is great if your dog likes water. If I notice them painting alot I cool them down by watering down their under side that seem to help alot. I saw that somewhere and it works great.

Had to smile about the AC constantly - here in south GA we live in the AC from about May to October!
As to tips - water is great b/c it evaporates and cools. You want it in the shade so the sun does not heat it up to a temp that negates the cooling. Misting is a great way to cool/lower the temps. Most gardening stores sell misting nozzles and even rods that cover a larger area. Lots of shade with cool surfaces like stone or brick. Dogs often dig to get to cool dirt so be prepared for digging. Lots of cool water -- change it often.

Wow, here in Hawaii we have the same problem, if not worse. It gets very hot here. We are lucky when the tradewinds come in and help keep things cool. Plus my dogs have black fur on their backs, so they can get pretty hot.
With my dogs, I make sure to have them well groomed and brushed, so that I take off all the loose undercoat as I can. Also, I haven't shaved down the fur because I didn't want them to get sunburn or mosquito bites. Our trainer told us not to wet the backs of the dogs, but the undersides, mouth and under the neck area to keep them cool. A kiddie pool is ideal for that. Another idea is to have a fan blowing to move the air around in the shaded areas. Even in the shade, if the air isn't moving, it can be miserable. Just be careful with the cord and electrical parts of the fan that the dog can't get to it, or have it fall in water. It would be really cool to have those huge fans with the mist like you see that football games. Lastly, I would suggest to get a mesh cot raised bed so that air can circulate under it while the dog rests on it. That only works if you dog isn't the destructive chewer type.

Trim them down don't shave them completely because they will sun burn but you can trim them. Mostly make sure there is lots of shade and water.

i would definitly get a kiddie pool filled with water and make sure you have shaded areas... i would be very careful with this because does can suffer heat strokes....

At the AWS shelter they also use kiddie pools in the dogs' big play yards. They seem to love them. With the water situation in California, you'll have to keep the level low and reuse the water for your plants.

Try giving her popcicles when you are home and freezing water to keep in her water dish so it will keep her water cooler. We have bought kiddie pools in the past and my huskies loved them, just keep the cleaned out. They'll have lots of fun and remember, they dont call it the dog days of summer for nothing.
