Separation anxiety
Details
My dads dog has seperation anxiety and she has eaten her way out of numerous cages. We had her on doggy prozak and that did not help. But we do have one cage that she cannot get out of when we both have to work. So does anyone know where to purchase the cages that the bars create squres that are smaler then one inch?
Well since everyone want more info the crate is a wire cage and the entire cage gives her venelation. She is only crated when my dad goes to his part time job usually no more than 5-6 hours. We did not crate her at first and she jumped through a window tried to eat a door knob and pees all over. The crate is really quite large she can stand up turn around and have plenty of room to lay down. She has been through training and is great when he is home but it does not matter if we leave for 30 minutes or 5 hours she still goes crazy he can't even go in the gas station and leave her even if someone else is with her in the car or she gets very anxious. We do not use the crate for punishment and when he is home she will lay in the crate and chew on a bone without any issues. I have ordered the pheromone spray to see if that would help. Futhermore she gets about two hours of run time in the yard before he goes to work to help get her run off energy.
I just have to say people are quick to say everything is inhumane when all you want to do is help the dog maybe next you will say to take her back to the shelter for the fourth time instead of asking for help. I was just looking for a little help thanks for all those that helped and get a life to all those that just want to talk about how everything is inhumane.

3 days agoI don't have a dog but others I know who have had to crate the dog as it would freakwhen they went out have left a tv or radio on while gone. Some will even call and talk to the pet via an answering machine. Anything is worth a try. And yes part of your problem may be she had been returned to the shelter numerous times. It will take time but eventually she'll realize she's ok

3 days agoI do not think I am necessarily "quick" to say "everything" is inhumane. I do not think you are a bad, or inhumane person at all. You gave very little information, and what you did give - "eaten her way out of numerous cages" - "looking for a cage with smaller than 1-inch holes" - "when we both have to work". Well, I could only go off that little information, and I am always truthful. I have never heard of a dog eating her way out of numerous cages, and that would certainly tell me that, no matter what the reason, the dog is quite upset in the cage. "Work" suggests a job, which is usually about 10 hours, counting driving time - didn't know it was part-time. And the cage with smaller than 1-inch holes, I do think that is a claustrophibic place for a dog to be for even 5 or 6 hours at a time, and the ventillation would also concern me greatly. Dogs can't sweat, as we know. If she gets real worked up, and it sounds like she sure does, and there isn't much air flow - well....... You said you were looking for a litle help - but all you asked was, where to purchase a crate with smaller than 1-inch holes. I am not on here to offend anyone, or make anyone mad. I guess I do think differently than many people. To be honest, I guess I DON'T think a dog should be crated in a cage with smaller than 1-inch holes with only enough room to turn around and lay down for 5-6 hours at a time when it is clearly frantic, by your own description of previous behavior. I guess people do that. I guess maybe this isn't the place for me, and maybe I should stick with Pet Wars.

4 days agoDoes this dog, by any chance, have any other odd behaviors occuring such as excessive begging for food? I'm just asking because my Tinker developed some separation anxiety (started chewing things up through the house, fighting with my other dogs, etc.) when he developed a stomach ulcer. He also panted excessively and wanted to go in and out, in and out until he had me nearly nuts! Once the ulcers were treated he went right back to his normal, fairly laid back self.

4 days agoHave you tried PetSmart, Petco, or Soldans they all care a wide variety of cages. Also I would like to say that I too have a dog and when she was younger she was crated. I do not think it is inhuman. It was a way to keep her out of trouble while we were away from home and unable to take her with us. With out the crate she would have destroyed the house. I think that Marta's idea is an excellent one!

4 days agoI'm wondering how long the dog is kept in the crate, and what size the crate is in comparison to the dog, and, quite honestly, if you're looking for a crate with holes smaller than one inch to put her in for extended periods of time, I think that's inhumane. Ventillation is just one of the issues. Animals are different and have different needs. Not all animals are right in every situation. I am just being honest. It's hard to help with such little information. I do really hope this dog isn't frantically sitting in a cage with smaller than one inch holes, trying to chew her way out, for 8 or 9 hours at a time, though. That's not what I would describe as a quality life.
