Why is that people gravitate towards the animals they do? What I mean by this is, why is it that I am a dog lover rather than a cat lover? Nothing against cats or any other animals. Why do I prefer DOGS? Any thoughts or logic to that?

I've never had any pets but I've always felt more comfortable with dogs. I am highly allergic to cats but growing up, my best friend always had several Siamese cats at a time while my cousins had some as well. Dogs just seem more emotionally available. My best friend has a terrier mix who is a complete spaz but whenever I go over, he dances around my legs until I give him a good cuddle. He's been known to place his head on my leg and watch movies with us.

I wonder if it has to do with lifestyle - even if a person isn't aware of it. I mean, I'm a homebody and I'm pretty inactive. I love dogs and cats both, but I gravitate towards cats. I'm admittedly lazy and it seems that often dogs are almost as much work as children! Cats don't necessarily need walks and baths. I can sit on my bum and exercise a cat by playing with it. I also love to hear a cat purr. It's very soothing. I suspect active people may tend towards dogs. In addition to all that, cats are more mysterious and aloof and sometimes I like a good challenge! : )

I am allergic to dogs and have never had one. My sister does and I really like him, but I am a cat person and always will be. I've had cats around since I was a little girl and I wonder if childhood experiences with pets affect how you feel one way or another towards pets.

I wonder that also. I'm a mixed animal family. we have dogs and two cats. And a snake. My fiance loves the reptiles, I love dogs. I never had a cat was never allowed to. Now I adopted two cats and I love them, but I won't own cats again. The climbing and jumping bothers me especially in my kitchen.

I've been wondering the same thing here lately. I have always thought of myself as strictly a dog person until we got a cat. I am smitten with this guy! I have never really liked cats but our new kitty has me wrapped around his paws!

I think some people just have the same attitude as certain animals. Think about what you like to do and how you react to different things. Are you more like a dog? It is funny how people pick dogs that look like them though. People pick animals that represent part of their own personality.

Maybe you grew up around one more than the other. I grew up with dogs all my life so I tend to lean towards dogs. I also grew up with large dogs, which I believe makes me have a preference towards large breeds.

I think it definitely depends on what you "need" out of the relationship. Of course maintenance and care are a factor in what you select, but when it comes to what you are drawn to, I think it comes down to your needs and perhaps your perception of your self. Just like our choices when we select a mate or friend.
