How can I break my dog from running straight to the ditches when he gets out?? Hes a lab, a young, black, floppy lab. Im not sure this can really be done, but I need advice. Its too cold to take him to the river to swim, I do in the summer, but all he thinks about is hitting those yucky ditches.

Our Labs like to swim even when there is ice on the water. We just take them in after the polar dip and towel them off and put them by the fire. They know when it's too cold for them and they won't go in.

My lab does the exact same thing. Other than holding him back using a leash, I have not found any other method that works. Labs love water. It is in their genes. I think temperature has something to do with it too. There is a creek that runs alongside this trail I walk with my dog. He begs me to let him play in the water during Summer days, but not so much in the winter (even though the creek is not frozen).

Wish I could help but that's what dogs do. Good luck!
